So you want to be a Youtuber?
So we know why your here. You want to become the next Pewdiepie right?
Well slow down and hold your horses before you start gaining the millions of subs on YouTube. You might need to learn the basics before you start gaining that following on the social video platform of the world.
300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. Almost 5 billion videos per day.
That's a lot of content to get through.
But with some careful planning, some tips, tricks & experience you will gain a following in no time.
Know your content
So you have successfully made a YouTube account. Great now...what?
Before you go head-first into becoming the most famous You tuber. You might want to consider what your channel is about. Below are some examples/
- Vlogger
- Gaming Channel
- Reaction
- Review
- Prank
- Music
- Crafts
- Variety
- ect
Those are just some of the examples of what you can become on YouTube. You may even want to combined them together to make your channel "Pop" with more audiences.
Which brings me on to point number two which is....
MAKE IT YOUR OWN!!!
Now in a world where most people want to become famous internet sensations. There will be some cross roads when it comes to content. Not all things "Original" as most pieces on YouTube these days are either mimicked or copied if its trending.
Case and point the "Bottle Cap Challenge"
The hard point i am making is that if your content is the same as everyone else's its very slim your content will get the clicks. As your audience has seen the video probably hundreds of times before they get to yours.
So make it your own. Flip it on its head?
Make a parody or Make fun of it?
Don't be afraid to take risks with your content.
*As long as its legal*
And last thing before we move on is just be yourself no one wants to watch the other millions of copy cats on YouTube. Don't become a character be yourself.
Can you edit?
Now we got that out the way here is the big question. Can you edit a video?
If so then i guess you don't need the rest of this blog huh?
Calm down Spielberg.
Before you go & make your funny gaming compilation with the dead memes.
You might want to learn how to edit a simple video. Now if you don't know how to edit a video don't worry to much about that. YouTube can actually help you with that. As there are literally thousands upon thousands of video tutorials teaching you from novice to expert on YouTube.
If your like me and don't want to sit through a forty-five minute tutorial on Premiere Pro then don't worry there are plenty of online classes to teach you how to make amazing videos.
Another important tip is to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
With practice & learning an editing software your slowly on your way to getting your first few subscribers.
The other cool thing is that you will start to find your own style which will draw people in. Remember what i said about being yourself?
So what else do we need?
So now we got you into the editors room wheres your footage?
There's no footage?
Well we wont get very far without that will we?
Do not threat though we can get you all ready for making those videos. Depending what content you want to make. You will require a couple of things.
First and foremost is a camera. Something to help you record that sweet crisp footage for your make-up vlog. Now i know what your going to say to me. "I cant afford a camera i have no income."
Well my friend on the other end of the screen. Do not worry as most mobile phones these days have cameras attached to them. You can always use that to get your start.
Most big You-tubers you look up to started on a "shoe-string" budget with little to no money available. However if you do have some money do some research on video cameras.
Again look at YouTube reviews or websites to compare those cheap video cameras you saw on the Amazon "prime day" sale.
Don,t start out bankrupting yourself start with something cheap & build your skills up till it becomes second nature.
Now if you don't require a camera if your camera shy then we need one other thing...A MICROPHONE!
That's right we need to get people to hear your sweet soothing voice.
(Please don't make an AMSR channel)
If your a camera shy individual you can always rely on your voice to be a tool to drive your content forward. A lot of people use this technique to keep there identity hidden until they feel more comfortable to appear on screen.
Much like the camera. Price isn't always a big factor. We can always use the power of "Google" to get us the answers we need. Do your research & work within your price range.
Also record the audio on many of the free the audio recording software on the web.
My personal choice is Adobe audition. However a free one that works just as well is Audacity
Add some flare?
Okay so now your an editing genius, a expert cinematographer & a sound man for universal stupids.
Great but a little bit of flare never hurt anyone. If you have the budget and the space. Why not add some production value for your content by making sets or even just having a green screen to make your work a little more professional. You can get full studio set ups on amazon for less then £100.
It also may become something for future videos if you want to add funny little gags or simply just mess around with a green screen.
Either way its a win.
So what we going to film today then brain?
(Many of you reading this wont get that reference)
So now that we have the production down. Its time to move on to planning your first video. Much as you would any project first you have to decide what it is you want to do. If your going to a video that requires a lot of shots in multiple locations then your video probably wont be done on the first day.
Where as if your recording a "Lets Play" video based around game play a lot of footage is already there for you to use or you can record that yourself by using a simple screen recording software.
Generally how i have tackled videos is pit the topics and then work around that.
With keeping things in mind such as time keeping & re-shoots.
Have a basic structure to your planned video. Keeping a structure to your video will help make the process from pre-production,post production and final product all the more easier.
Our YouTube overlords
So now we have our finished product you have uploaded your new bit of content to world. But your missing a few things. Look at the image Below..
So this is the meat of your YouTube video. This what people will see and read before they even click on your video.
First of all is your title.
Make it engaging make it bounce of the page so people want to click it....However stay true to your source material. That is the more ethical way to do things on YouTube.
However if your feeling naughty you can do something called "Click Bait" which as it sounds is dangling a video which is the "Bait" in-front of your viewer which makes them "Click" the video. usually this is done to over exaggerate things to get views on your videos.
But if it works it works.
Non-Clickbait:
Click Bait
With the use of custom thumbnails you can make some truly awesome stuff for your videos. Mainly people use Photoshop but there are other alternatives if you wish to use those as well.
Again you can learn Photoshop through YouTube as well.
So now we have covered the title and the photo of your video. Next is the description. Much with anything these days keep it short. But also this is the prime place to place your social media links as well as any 3rd party promotions you are part of to help you grown.
Now comes on to the final part of our little journey.
The TAGS. Tags are a great marketing tool to help you grab viewers. tags essentially work the same as tags on other social media platforms. The tags are what people search for on YouTube. However if your starting out with a zero sub count. And type a generic term such as "Vlog" you wont get the numbers.
If you use Google chrome you can use a tool called Tube Buddy.
Which helps you work around your tags as well as what is your chance of your video being found with a certain tag.
Whats Next?
So the video is uploaded the tags are done and we are live but the views are slowly coming in but not at the rate you expected. So how can we get those clicks simple. Social media unless you have been living under a rock for the past ten years social media is the biggest marketing tool in the world. And its free. Share around your video on all major social media platforms.
This will drive fan engagement and allow more people to see your video.
Collaborations?
One good tool to grow subscribers is to meet other people who make videos on YouTube sometimes becoming friends with other You-tubers won't only get you a new friend who has a hobby like yourself, But if they are popular enough. Doing a collaboration video can help both your numbers grow.
Final tips
And now my YouTube babies it is time for me to send you away on your way to become big time You-tubers but not before i part my words of personal wisdom on you.
First of all keep your content consistent. But what fits round your life style. If you can do daily videos do daily videos if you can do one video a week stick to that. Consistency is key into helping you grow on any platform.
Secondly always keep learning. Just because you think your videos are perfect. Never stop learning your videos will only benefit from you learning either a new technique or effect for your videos. It will pay off in the future and it can also help you potentially get a job in later life.
Keep sane. With YouTube it can become a stressful place. Much with any hobby or job remember you have limits. Don't break your back because you missed an upload or your mental health will slowly suffer. Remember why you started making videos in the first place and remember your health comes first.
The final thing i can say to you is have fun with your future on YouTube. Most journeys in life are a struggle. Much with anything people start from the bottom and reach the top. Every big You-tuber you look up to started in your shoes. So don't feel bad if your video gets one view or one thousand views.
One video can change it all....
